(CHICAGO) As expected, the Supreme Court has given Gov. Bruce Rauner a major victory this morning by ruling public sector unions cannot compel workers to pay “fair share” fees if they don’t want to be members of the union.
It’s a big victory for Rauner which will help him argue that a second term would be different.
On the steps of the Supreme Court in Washington, he took a victory lap, noting “The important point of this case is that everything a union does by its nature, everything, not just campaign contributions, everything that it does is political. It has a political impact : government policy, government spending, tax rates, tax burdens. Everything’s political and when the employee is forced to support the union activity that they do not necessarily agree with, that’s a violation of their political speech.”
At Rauner’s side was the plaintiff in the case, Mark Janus, who said “It will not affect the collective bargaining. Unions will have that continued right. It’s just that the worker now has that ability to make his own decision or her decision.”
Up next, we will learn how many public sector workers will opt out of helping to pay for collective bargaining while accepting the benefits.
