(CHICAGO) Crusading Father Michael Pfleger is planning a march against violence on the Dan Ryan Expressway on Saturday, July 7th, but First Deputy Police Supt Tony Riccio is asking him to take it to a street in a community.
Riccio says he’s all for a march against violence, but doing it on the Dan Ryan would pull something like 200 officers from the communities where the violence is, adding “I think it runs contrary to what he’s trying to accomplish. We don’t want to pull officers out of the communities to escort a march down the expressway. Keep the march in the community. Let ’em march thru the neighborhoods. Show the residents of the community how much support they do have for stopping the violence, not on the Dan Ryan Expressway. People use that expressway for business, recreation, emegency vehicles, coming and going from hospitals, visiting family. This is gonna cause a major tie-up of that expressay for a very long period of time.”
Riccio says so far, Father Mike has not been receptive to moving his march from the Ryan.
