(CHICAGO) In the race for mayor, the Illinois Campaign for Political Reform has filed a formal complaint with the state against challenger Willie Wilson for giving away money.
Wilson says he’s not trying to buy votes when he gives away money to the poor, but ICPR’s executive director Mary Miro says he still needs to report the money in question because his campaign benefits from it.
“There’s no law that says mayoral candidates cannot hand out cash,” says Miro, “If all of the mayoral candidates wanted to give out cash all over the city, there’s no law against that. However, we are contending that the cash that he did give out which was from his foundation and it should have been reported by the foundation as an in-kind campaign donation, and it was not.”
So the complaint will keep the controversy in play, giving Wilson’s generosity even more attention.
