(CHICAGO) The proposed federal consent decree on Chicago Police conduct now includes the disputed requirement that cops who point a gun at someone must file a report on the incident.
But issue was hotly debated today at the City Club.
The issue is whether cops will be injured or killed if they hesitate to draw their weapons.
Lori Lightfoot, the candidate for mayor who led the police accountability task force, said “nonsense,” adding “The notion that they’re not going to pull their gun and point it when necessary, that just makes no sense to me.”
But Fraternal Order of Police president Kevin Graham vehemently disagreed, saying “We have an officer right now who has suffered serious brain injury. She was afraid to pull a gun and her exact comments were ‘I don’t want to be the next police officer accused of shooting somebody unnecessarily. She will never return to the job! She is at home and will probably be at her home for the rest of her life’.”
But Mayor Emanuel, who’s not running for re-election, is allowing the documentation into the deal.
