(CHICAGO) Bill Cameron has the round up reaction from local politicians to the Van Dyke verdict.
At City Hall, Emanuel and his police supt Eddie Johnson issued a statement on paper. In it, they say, ” while the jury has heard the case and reached its conclusion, our collective work is not done. The effort to drive lasting reform and rebuild bonds of trust between residents and police must carry on with vigor.”
Taping “Connected to Chicago” for Sunday night at 7, mayoral candidate Lori Lightfoot, the former Police Board president said, “The heightened awareness of local police issues has forever been changed as a result not only of Laquan McDonald’s death but the manner in which the video of that shooting came into public view.”
Garry McCarthy, the police supt who got fired in the controversy and is now a candidate for mayor says, “IT IS TIME FOR ALL OF US TO COME TOGETHER AROUND WHAT UNITES US….AND TO STOP PAYING SO MUCH ATTENTION TO THE THINGS THAT DIVIDE US”.
Leading mayoral candidate Toni Preckwinkle says, “This is important not only about the actions of an individual police officer but about the code of silence within the police department.”
Congressman Luis Gutierrez was blunt. He says, “The facts were clear and despite the efforts of the Emanuel Administration to keep the truth from the public, the truth has come to light.
