On Thursday, the Washington Post published the final article by missing journalist Jamal Khosheggi – which ironically warned against Arab governments “silencing the media”.
An editor says they received the column from Khosheggi’s assistant the day after he went missing, and held off on publishing it in the hopes that he might still be alive, saying “Now I have to accept: That is not going to happen”.
In the article, Khosheggi warned that Middle East nations have “free rein” to silence journalists and “aggressively” block the internet.
Khosheggi is believed to have been murdered inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. The Saudi government first denied involvement but is reportedly blaming an ‘interrogation gone wrong’ for his death.
