(CHICAGO) At City Hall this afternoon, there was yet another racial flap in the City Council as the new Fire Commissioner Richard Ford appeared in city budget hearings.
It all got started when Ald. Ariel Raboyras asked Fire Commissioner Ford a planted, softball question, “Can we hear from you a little bit about your career?”
Commissioner Ford was happy to review his 35 years in the fire dept, but Ald Carrie Austin who chairs the budget committee took offense, saying “I think that was very insulting! You not sitting there just Johnny Come Lately. As I said when you got started, from the bottom to the top! But all of a sudden, your qualifications are gonna come into question? I’m very insulted! I never recall him asking that of Commissioner Santiago! But it was hooray, hooray, hooray when he sat here.”
So, did Commissioner Ford take offense? “I did not.”
Nonetheless it was another racial flap at city hall.
