The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force suggests that your doctor should check on your drinking during checkups to see if you use alcohol in an unhealthy way.
They advise that if a person regularly drinks more than the limits that are recommended, that they should be provided with brief counseling.
Unhealthy drinking for men 21-64 refers to having more than four drinks in a single day or more than 14 drinks over a week. For women of the same age, it is having more than three drinks in a day or more than seven drinks in a week.
Dr. Richard Saitz comments on the low number of people discussing alcohol use with their doctors saying, “1 in 6 patients reports having discussed alcohol with their physician; rats in Europe are similarly low.”
