(SPRINGFIELD) Both Houses of the legislature have sent the governor a bill to restore parole to the Illinois prison system.
Back in the ’70s under Gov .Thompson, Illinois eliminated parole in favor of determinate sentencing.
Retiring Hyde Park Rep Barbara Flynn Curry persuaded the House to approve parole applications in the future after 10 or 20 years for those who were 18, 19 or 20 when they committed their crimes.
“Lengthy sentences – very costly to the taxpayers – do not make us safer in the streets.”
This may be Curry’s last bill and it’s up to the governor to decide whether it will become law.
