You might need some extra tissues for this story – an Army Ranger dog named Maiko was killed while saving the lives of his fellow soldiers.
Maiko was leading a group of soldiers into a compound when an Al-Qaida militant opened fire. That revealed the militants’ location, which allowed the Rangers to take it out without further loss of life.
A biography of the 7-year-old dog says Maiko’s actions “directly saved the life of his handler” as well as “other Rangers involved during the clearance”.
The biography concludes by saying “MPC Maiko will forever be remembered by his character and the teammate he truly was.”
