A Florida man is in jail after attacking a McDonald’s employee in a dispute over straws.
Daniel Taylor, of St. Petersburg, faces two counts of battery for the Thursday fracas, which reportedly erupted after Taylor was unable to find a straw in the fast food restaurant’s lobby. When Yasmine James told the man a new law had gone into effect that prohibits plastic straws from being accessible by customers, Taylor grabbed her by the shirt and attempted to pull her over the counter, police say. A few moments later, he kicked another employee in the stomach as he was being escorted out.
Under the new law, which went into effect January 1, diners at St. Petersburg eateries are required to ask for straws. It will remain in effect until 2020, when the use of straws will become illegal in the Florida city.
