
A California man who spent 39 years in prison for a crime he didn’t commit has been awarded $21 million for the inconvenience.
Craig Coley was convicted in 1978 of murdering Rhonda Wicht and her 4-year-old son, Donald — a crime he adamantly denied committing from the start. Nearly four decades after his incarceration, he was finally pardoned in 2017. He was 70 years old when he was released.
Although California’s Victim’s Compensation Government Claim Board gave him $2 million following his release, Coley sued Coley sued Simi Valley, the city that prosecuted him. On Saturday, lawyers for both sides agreed to the out-of-court settlement.
