That “Green New Deal” proposed by New York Democrat congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez won’t come cheap. According to one study, the price tag could reach upwards of $93 trillion.
Working with the think tank American Action Forum, the former director of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office found “The Green New Deal is clearly very expensive,” working out to approximately $600,000 per household.
Douglas Holtz-Eakin did admit that pinning down an exact figure was difficult since “the breadth of its proposals makes it daunting to assess the GND (Green New Deal) using the standard tools of policy analysis,” noting that some double-counting may have occurred.
Meanwhile, backers of the plan say that inaction would be far more costly, citing a UN report that claims climate change could wipe $500 billion annually from the US economy.
