(CHICAGO) At City Hall, Mayor Emanuel’s controversial new police and fire academy has gained another level of approval despite objections in the City Council Zoning Committee.
It’s a $95 million dollar item that both mayoral candidates – Lori Lightfoot and Toni Preckwinkle – wanted to delay until one of them takes over. And the rhetoric from the No Cop Academy movement against Zoning Committee chairman James Cappleman and the local alderman Emma Mitts was supercharged.
“Cappleman, you are a racist! Emma Mitts, your policies have displaced us. I hope the next mayor takes you all’s jobs away because you sold your souls to the devil, Rahm Emanuel!”
Chairman Cappleman’s support was interesting because he’s in a runoff against a challenger who opposes the project.
