(CHICAGO) — A judge has appointed a former federal prosecutor to keep tabs on the Chicago Police Department as they implement a consent decree.
Maggie Hickey, who was also a former Illinois executive inspector general, will make sure the police department is complying with the terms of the consent decree. The reform deal was struck between Mayor Rahm Emanuel and then-Attorney General Lisa Madigan.
The reforms are supposed to make it easier to investigate officers for wrongdoing and includes the requirement that officers must document each time they draw their weapons.
The police union opposes the decree, saying it will make officers jobs more difficult.
