A British man has become the second person in history to be cured of the AIDS virus.
The unidentified patient, who was HIV positive when he was admitted into the hospital, has been cleared of the disease following a bone marrow transplant from an HIV resistant donor, doctors say. It’s the second time the feat has been accomplished, following a similar procedure performed in 2007 on Timothy Brown, an American man.
Despite the success, doctors are hesitant to call the procedure a “cure for AIDS.” In addition to requiring a stem cell donor with a rare genetic mutation that resists HIV infection, enough time hasn’t passed to be sure the virus won’t return in the future, doctors say.
