In what could amount to good news for oceanic life but bad news for the plastic industry, Hawaii lawmakers are considering a statewide ban on plastic products at restaurants.
If the proposed bill is approved, Hawaii will become the first state to completely remove all disposable plastic products from restaurants. Other states, like California and Seattle, have passed similar laws, they allow restaurants to give out plastic products when customers request them.
In the U.S., 500 million plastic straws are thrown away every day, according to Senator Mike Gabbard, the sponsor of the bill. He adds 95 percent of all plastic packaging is used only once before being discarded.
