Although its usual audience members are limited to people living in the Fairbanks, Alaska area, the northern lights will be taking its show on the road this weekend.
Thanks to a geomagnetic storm that’s expected to amplify the spectral phenomenon’s reach, the northern lights — or aurora borealis — on Saturday could be visible to residents across the entire northern region of the United States, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
But that’s only if conditions are right. To see the colorful display of electrons dancing around in the planet’s upper atmosphere, the sky needs to be cloud-free and very dark, the NOAA says.
