Releasing balloons into the air is an eye-catching way to mark a special occasion. But a number of states want to take the air out of the party.
As many as six states are considering bills that would ban the release large numbers of helium balloons into the air, citing environmental concerns and threats to local wildlife.
Ecologists say deflated balloons can end up being eaten by birds or marine creatures like turtles. Several states including California, Connecticut, Florida, Tennessee, and Virginia already have similar laws in place.
