A school district in Rhode Island is cracking down on kids whose families haven’t paid their lunch tabs — by serving them cold sandwiches instead of hot lunches.
The new police, instituted by Warwick Public Schools, is in response to $40,000 in unpaid meal fees. The decision has sparked outrage among parents, prompting one restaurant owner to offer $4,000 to help reduce the outstanding debt. But the school district turned him down, saying it wouldn’t be fair to pay for some students but not others.
