(CHICAGO) — A Cook County judge has ruled to unseal R. Kelly’s divorce case. That move comes on the same day that another judge vacated a default judgement in a separate case.
Kelly’s divorce records have remained sealed for more than a decade but a judge ruled Wednesday the case would be unsealed moving forward, including child support issues. Earlier this year, Kelly spent three nights in jail for failure to pay more than $161,000 in overdue child support.
Meanwhile, another Cook County judge has vacated a default judgement against Kelly in a sexual abuse lawsuit filed against him. Kelly failed to appear for hearings back in February prompting the judge to enter the default judgment last month. Kelly’s attorneys argued he failed to respond because he couldn’t read the summons. The judge’s decision means the lawsuit can proceed to trial. The woman alleges she was a victim of abuse at the hands of Kelly when she was 16.
The next hearing on that lawsuit is set for June 19.
