As if frontline workers don’t have enough to worry about while fighting the coronavirus, fake PPE has been flooding into the US.
According to the Associated Press , millions of counterfeit medical masks, gloves, gowns and other supplies are getting seized by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Homeland Security Investigations.
Steve Francis, HSI’s assistant director for global trade investigations, called it “unprecedented,” noting, “These are really bad times for people who are out there trying to do the right thing and be helpful, and they end up being exploited.”
The AP points out that a mask with ear loops, rather than the stretchable bands found on authentic ones, is a “telltale sign” the N95 stamped item isn’t real.
