(CHICAGO) — Mayor Brandon Johnson and a handful of aldermen met face to face at City Hall on Monday afternoon but after just 30 minutes the meeting ended with no forward movement on a budget.
Aldermen presented an alternative budget that they had tweaked, dropping a proposed increase to garbage fees and keeping funding for youth summer jobs at a level agreeable by the mayor. Even with those fixes, the mayor said the plan lacked specific details.
The mayor has doubled down on a corporate head tax which is opposed by a number of aldermen and the governor.
City Council has until December 30 to pass a budget. Council members are scheduled to meet at least three times this week.
