(WASHINGTON, D.C.) — After the U.S. Supreme Court struck down President Donald Trump’s tariffs under one law, Trump pivoted, tapping other presidential powers and raising global tariffs to 15-percent. Economists speculate that move will be challenged in court as well.
As for the money already collected, The White House says that’s for the courts to decide. U.S. Trade Rep. Jamieson Greer blasted Democratic governors like Gavin Newsom and J.B. Pritzker for urging tariff refund checks saying, “It’s clear that neither of these two guys has ever worked in import-export business… and if they knew anything about it, they would know that the returns just go to companies, often foreign companies with a subsidiary here in the U.S.”
It is expected that talk of tariffs and the economy will dominate his State of the Union Address. Trump has called tariffs his favorite negotiating tool and credits them with lowering inflation, raising wages, boosting U.S. manufacturing, and shrinking the trade deficit.
