Navy Pier officials say they are “disappointed” after fog impacted the visibility of a massive Fourth of July fireworks display on Saturday, but they’re offering residents an interesting freebie as a result.
Fog rolled in off of Lake Michigan during the late afternoon hours on Saturday and persisted into the evening, adding an eerie element to the fireworks display that Navy Pier officials described as its “largest and longest” show ever produced.
The show, coinciding with the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, was intended to be a celebration of the United States and its history, but visitors to the Pier and the surrounding areas were left with limited views of the display due to the heavy fog that rolled in following showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon.
In a Facebook post overnight, Navy Pier officials said they were “disappointed” that the show was impacted by fog, and they offered visitors a token of appreciation.
According to officials, Navy Pier will offer free rides on its iconic Centennial Wheel beginning at 6 p.m. every Wednesday through Labor Day, allowing visitors to check out the attraction prior to the Pier’s biweekly fireworks display on Wednesday nights.
“We are disappointed with the effect fog had on tonight’s Independence Day fireworks’ visibility, and understand it impacted our guests’ experience,” the post said.
Saturday’s show was set to be 15 minutes long and was described as the “largest and longest” display Navy Pier has produced. The iconic Chicago attraction hosts fireworks displays every Wednesday and Saturday during the summer, and will continue to do this year.
