(CHICAGO) — Chicago’s progressive mayor is taking another symbolic jab at President Trump and his administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration as violent crime continues to plague his city.
This time, Mayor Brandon Johnson is ordering city contractors and subcontractors to disclose whether they have contracts with other government or law enforcement agencies including ICE.
The order comes as the advocacy group “Not With Our Money” says Chicago currently has billions of dollars in contracts with companies that also do business with ICE. Johnson says taxpayer money should not support companies engaged in what he calls corrupt or abusive practices.
“Public money should strengthen our neighborhoods, create opportunity, and serve the people who call Chicago home, not support practices that harm our communities,” Johnson told reporters.
But critics, including Democratic Alderman Ray Lopez (15th Ward), say the order lacks legislative teeth and is part of a series of similar executive actions by the mayor that have little practical impact, with Ald Lopez telling Fox, “When you have a mayor and an administration that says we’re going to cut the red tape, this is the exact opposite of cutting the red tape especially if you want to do business with the City of Chicago.”
