(Springfield, IL) — Legislative Inspector General Michael McCuskey announced he will resign amid criticism of his handling of sexual harassment investigations.
House Republicans are now calling for reforms to strengthen the IG’s authority and independence.
“We have a serious ethics problem in Illinois government,” said State Rep. Dan Ugaste (R-Geneva), pointing out that even though the best known recent incidents are at the state level, fairly recent history also shows that problems exist at the local level in Illinois as well.
He says the ethics scandals that have rocked Illinois government over the past few years should have been all that was needed for comprehensive reforms to be passed, making it clear corrupt behavior will not be tolerated.
McCuskey’s resignation comes after questions about the investigation into former State Rep. Harry Benton (D-Plainfield) who resigned over sexual harassment allegations.
