Rep. Brandon Gill, R-Texas, in a fundraising email urged his supporters to sign a petition to deport Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., alleging she is “more loyal to illegal Somalians than she is to the United States,” Axios reported.
“Friend, we should have never let Ilhan Omar into our country. And frankly, America would be a much better place if she were to be sent back to Somalia,” the email reads.
“Recently, it came out that Ilhan Omar is hosting free workshops for Somalians, who are in our country illegally, on how to evade ICE [Immigrations and Customs Enforcement] and deportation. It could not be more blatant: Ilhan Omar is more loyal to illegal Somalians than she is to the United States, or the office she was elected to.”
Speaking on the podcast “Mehdi Unfiltered,” Omar dismissed Gill and his tactics, saying, “I’m at the point where it’s become really hard to have an intellectual debate with any of these people because the level of stupidity that they are displaying every single day is, frankly, embarrassing.”
Sharing the Axios story reporting on the fundraising email, Rep. Mark Pocan, D-Wis., used harsher language to push back at Gill, posting on X, “@SpeakerJohnson, get control of your caucus before we have to take other actions. This is demeaning & embarrassing. We all need to be better than this s***. I expect an answer today.”
Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., also took issue with Gill’s fundraising topic, posting on X, “It’s disgusting that Republicans are attempting to raise money by threatening to deport a US citizen just because they disagree with her. Ilhan Omar is a tireless advocate for her district, a fierce protector of our democracy, and I know these fascist threats won’t keep her down.”
Omar, who during the Somali Civil War in 1995 came to the U.S. as a refugee and became a U.S. citizen in 2000, remains popular with her constituents. She easily won reelection in 2024 over Republican challenger Dalia al-Aqidi 74.4%-24.6%.
Gill, a freshman member of Congress from Texas’ 26th Congressional District, has established himself as a firebrand Republican, telling Newsmax last month that he’s “not interested in bipartisanship for the sake of bipartisanship.”
