Retired Chicago deputy chief shot during robbery attempt

(CHICAGO) A retired Chicago deputy police chief was wounded when he was targeted by an alleged robber as he was walking near his home.

Former Deputy Chief Fred Coffey returned fire early Wednesday, wounding the suspect.

The 72-year-old Coffey was wounded in the arm. Police say the robber, 21, suffered a wound in the lower body. Both were stabilized at hospitals, but police were releasing few other details.

The shooting occurred in a park, near an exercise session for senior citizens.

The suspect, who wasn’t immediately identified, was arrested shortly after the shooting.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson said in a statement that gun offenders “do not discriminate.” He added gun offenders’ reckless conduct and lack of respect puts families, public servants and anything that stands in their way at risk.”
