Illinois Dems introduce new gun legislation

(CHICAGO) There are three plans making their way through Springfield this week that would help keep guns out of the hands of those with mental illnesses. Both House and Senate Democrats introduced the three-pronged plan this week.

All of the plans target FOID cards – identification cards for gun owners in the state.

One plan would temporarily revoke gun permits of anyone who shows signs of being a danger to themselves or others. Anyone living with that person would be allowed to file a petition in any circuit court to have their FOID card invalidated. The second plan would require police to revoke gun permits of anyone who has an order of protection filed against them.

The third plan would stay within the court system, requiring clerks to report every person who a judge deems mentally disabled to state police. The ISP would then revoke that person’s gun permits.

Gun rights advocates say all of those plans infringe on a person’s constitutional rights. The bills are up for consideration this month by the House and Senate chambers.
