Early end to Jesse Jackson Jr.’s supervised release from prison

(CHICAGO) A federal judge has agreed to end former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.’s supervised release from prison 18 months early, at his request.

U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson, who is based in Washington, D.C., issued her order Tuesday, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting. The former congressman pointed out in a court filing last month that he has “maintained a positive and cooperative relationship with his probation officer and has abided by all terms and conditions of his supervised release.” He also said he has paid a $750,000 judgment.

Federal prosecutors did not object to Jackson’s request. In a statement Tuesday, Jackson said he was “pleased” with the judge’s decision.

The judge sentenced Jackson in August 2013 to 30 months in prison, followed by 36 months of supervised release. She told him he could not possess a gun “or other dangerous” weapon while on supervised release and she told him to steer clear of illegal drugs and any other crime. He was also told to submit to DNA collection by federal authorities and to participate in mental health treatment.

Additionally, the judge ordered him to perform 500 hours of community service and hand over financial documents to the probation office. In their own filing Friday, the feds said Jackson has fulfilled the community service requirement and “has not committed any violations while on supervised release.”

The judge also sentenced Jackson’s now estranged wife, former Ald. Sandi Jackson, to a year in prison followed by a year of supervised release. Sandi Jackson left federal prison six months ago.

Both Jacksons, who are now in the midst of a contentious divorce, pleaded guilty to various schemes relating to the looting of his congressional campaign fund. The former South Side 7th Ward alderman and the former 2nd Congressional District lawmaker each went to prison for diverting $750,000 from campaign funds for their personal use between 2005 and 2012.

Jesse Jackson Jr. files for divorce from wife of 25 years

CHICAGO (AP) — A once-politically powerful couple might be going separate ways.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports (http://bit.ly/2hmRID1 ) that ex-Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr. has filed for divorce from his wife of 25 years — former Chicago Alderwoman Sandi Jackson.

Cook County court records show that Jesse Jackson Jr. filed a petition for dissolution of marriage Monday citing “irreconcilable differences.”

Both Jacksons pleaded guilty in August 2013 to schemes related to misuse of a congressional campaign fund. Each was sentenced to prison for diverting $750,000 in campaign funds to personal use from 2005 to 2012.

A judge allowed staggered sentences so one parent could remain with the couple’s two minor children.

The 51-year-old Jesse Jackson Jr. served 23 months of a 30-month sentence. The 53-year-old Sandi Jackson was sentenced to one year.

Black Friday protest planned along Michigan Avenue

(CHICAGO) For the second consecutive year, protesters are planning a Black Friday boycott along the Magnificent Mile, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting.

The protest is scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Friday at the Water Tower monument at Chicago and Michigan avenues, according to organizers.

As of Tuesday evening, more than 400 people have said they will attend the protest, which will denounce the city’s implementation of the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, COPA, instead of a version preferred by protestors. That alternative watchdog, dubbed the Civilian Police Accountability Council, would be made up of members elected by the public.

“In passing COPA, the City Council and the Mayor have completely ignored the democratic demands of the people of Chicago for an elected Civilian Police Accountability Council,” the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression wrote on its Facebook.

The Rev. Jesse Jackson’s Rainbow PUSH Coalition organized the protest last year in the wake of the release of the Laquan McDonald shooting video. Hundreds of protesters marched along North Michigan Avenue, with some preventing shoppers from entering stores. Four people were arrested.

Sandi Jackson Released From Prison

By Nick Gale, WLS-AM 890 News

(CHICAGO) Former Chicago Alderman Sandi Jackson has been released from a federal prison camp.

Jackson, the wife of disgraced former U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr., reported to a woman’s prison in West Virginia on October 20, 2015, after pleading guilty to filing false income tax returns to cover up her husband’s illegal actions. She was set to be released October 18 of this year.

It’s unclear where she went after being released but generally federal prisoners are placed in a halfway house or sentenced to finish out their prison term under home confinement. The Jackson reside in Washington, D.C.

In February 2013, Jesse Jackson Jr. admitted to violating federal campaign laws by using campaign funds to make personal purchases. He pleaded guilty to one count of wire and mail fraud. He served his jail time ahead of his wife in a deal that staggered their sentences so they could care for their children.

UPDATE: Laquan McDonald protesters block shoppers, cut off Jesse Jackson

(CHICAGO) A group of protesters cut off the Rev. Jesse Jackson’s speech on Laquan McDonald’s deadly shooting Friday when they pulled the leader’s microphone and stormed the podium while he spoke outside the historic Water Tower, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting.

“Indict Rahm!” the protesters shouted as a brief shoving match ensued.

Jackson and others who were scheduled to speak stopped their activities as the masses hijacked Jackson’s presentation and competed with the shoppers who flocked downtown to take advantage of Black Friday sales.

“No justice, no shopping,” some chanted. “Black lives matter, not Black Friday!”

Others screamed, “16 shots, 13 months,” pointing to how long it took authorities to charge Chicago Police Officer Jason Van Dyke in the African-American teenager’s death.

“We want Rahm Emanuel in jail,” others said. They also chanted, “Black out Black Friday” and “The whole system is guilty as hell.”

A unity march, which started at Pioneer Court, was organized by the Rainbow PUSH Coalition. But other groups, including one called “Black Power” were protesting the murder as well.

During Friday’s demonstration, officers blocked off the entrance of the Water Tower Place. Some protesters had apparently tried to get into the popular shopping center.

At one point, shoppers were turned away from entering. “No justice, no profit,” marchers screamed.

Some protesters yelled at shoppers in front of Topshop, “Don’t shop today!” But the shoppers went in anyway.

There were some demonstrators who linked their arms in front of many stores, refusing to let anyone in.

Several police officers lined up across the doors of Nordstrom on Michigan Avenue to let people pass in and out.

A couple from Carbondale came to Michigan Avenue Friday to go Zara and Sephora. They didn’t get into to either.

When told about McDonald’s shooting death, they were astounded. “That’s crazy,” Enoch Hwang said.

On Tuesday, the Chicago Police released a graphic dashcam video that captured the 16 shots fired by Van Dyke in October 2014. Van Dyke was charged the same day.

Outrage and protests followed the court-ordered release of the footage.
