Manufacturing Job Losses Concern for State

By Nick Gale, WLS News

A new analysis shows that Illinois continued to shed jobs in September including nearly 2,000 in the manufacturing sector.

Last month the state lost a total of 6,900 jobs, including 1,800 manufacturing jobs and Michael Lucci with the Illinois Policy Institute says compared to neighboring states, the outlook for Illinois doesn’t look good.

“Year to date we’re down 12,500 jobs and then Ohio, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin combined, they’re up nearly 35,000 jobs between those states,” Lucci said. “The big difference is they have very different policies. In Illinois we have policies that make it difficult for manufacturing workers to find those good paying, rewarding jobs because manufactures are largely opting out of creating those jobs here.”

The IPI sides with Gov. Bruce Rauner in his plans to retain and create jobs by reforming workers compensations and tax and spending reforms.

The biggest job losses last month were in trade, transportation and utilities (-6,400); leisure and hospitality (-1,900); and manufacturing (-1,800). Illinois had job gains in government (+2,100); other services (+1,500); and education and health services (+1,400).
