Update: Gibson and McDermott to Thunder for Cameron Payne and others

By Cliff Brunt, AP Sports Writer

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) —  Just before today’s NBA trade deadline, the Chicago Bulls have sent forwards Taj Gibson and Doug McDermott to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Mark Bartelstein, the agent for Taj Gibson and Doug McDermot has confirmed in an email to The Associated Press, that the Bull players were being traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder. In return the Thunder will send Cameron Payne, Joffrey Lauvergne and Anthony Morrow to Chicago. According to Bartelstein’s email, the Bulls also will send a 2018 second-round pick to the Thunder.

Gibson adds the athleticism and experience to the front line that the Thunder lost when they traded Serge Ibaka in last year’s draft. McDermott improves the Thunder’s shaky outside shooting.

Payne has been considered a promising backup to All-Star Rusell Westbrook,  but had missed much of the season with a foot injury. Morrow, primarily a 3-point shooter, lost playing time to rookie Alex Abrines this season.

BULLS SIGN BENNIE “TREY” FLOWERS TO ONE-DAY CONTRACT

The Chicago Bulls announced that the team will sign guard Bennie “Trey” Flowers to a one-day contract on December 28, 2016. Trey, a Kansas City, Mo. native, comes to the Bulls from Central Catholic High School in Portland, Ore. via Make-A-Wish Illinois and Oregon.

“I am thrilled to welcome Trey to the Bulls, as I know he will be the perfect teammate and professional on and off the court,” said Chicago Bulls General Manager Gar Forman. “Trey brings an unprecedented level of toughness and strength to our team after what he has been through, and we know he will be able to inspire his new teammates with his story. I am confident that he has all of the intangibles to be a real contributor to this team right away.”

Trey, 17, has dreamed of playing in the same arena as his basketball idol Michael Jordan since he learned to play basketball at the age of two. The Make-A-Wish Foundation wanted to make this dream come true after he survived an eight-hour liver transplant operation after going into inexplicable, acute liver failure in the spring of 2015. His remarkable recovery from his liver issues saw Trey bounce back three months quicker than expected, earning him the nickname “The Rockstar” from his doctors at Stanford University. Nearly a year and a half after his surgery, Trey is now able to work out and be active again.

“I’m excited to be a part of the organization. I’ve always admired Dwyane Wade and am eager to experience the game at the United Center,” Trey said. “They tell me I’m a fighter because of what I’ve overcome. I look forward to bringing that fighting spirit to the Bulls.”

Dwyane Wade signs with Bulls

(CHICAGO) A bombshell coming out of NBA free agency, as the Bulls have signed Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade. Yahoo! Sports reports the deal is worth $47.5 million over two years with a player option for a 3rd season.

In order to fit Wade under the salary cap, the Bulls traded Mike Dunleavy Jr to the Cleveland Cavaliers and guard Jose Calderon- who came over in the Derrick Rose deal- to the LA Lakers.

It’s a homecoming for Wade, who is originally from the South Side, and grew up in south suburban Robbins. He was a 2-sport athlete at Richards High School in Oak Lawn before attending college at Marquette.

In 13 years with the Miami Heat, Wade won 3 NBA titles, was selected to 12 All-Star Games, and averaged nearly 24 points per game.

Bulls Front Office Talking About Thibs

By Nick Gale, WLS News

The Bulls first put out a press release to announce they fired Head Coach Tom Thibodeau and later held a press conference.

LISTEN to Nick Gale’s report:

In the press release, Bulls Chairman Jerry Reinsdorf talked about a departure from communication, openness and trust. During the press conference, Vice President of Basketball Operations John Paxson echoed the thought.

“Obviously there was a breakdown, that’s not a secret by any stretch of the imagination…but you have to have a situation where you’re all pulling in the same direction and once that stops, then its very difficult to move forward, and our whole goal now is to move forward,” Paxson said.

He also says they likely wouldn’t be pulling the plug on Thibodeau if the Bulls had made it beyond the playoffs the past five seasons.

“We probably wouldn’t be sitting here if we won a championship, you know, that’s just the truth, but we haven’t done that and I go back to this missed opportunity this year where we felt we had a real chance.”

Bulls General Manager Gar Forman isn’t talking up any one replacement coach yet, but says they are looking for “the right fit” for the players, the team and the Bulls organization. He says the next coach should be a leader with good communication skills, excellent knowledge of basketball, is open and creative.

Also dismissed was assistant coach Andy Greer, who also joined the Bulls in 2010.

CHICAGO—As the Chicago Bulls players face elimination this weekend at the hands of the surging Brooklyn Nets, Bulls execs have already moved beyond the playoffs and started memorializing the 2013 season.

While the statue artist has cleared the statue for unveiling—see below “street test”— Derrick has requested that it not be on display until he knows, in his mind, that it’s ready.
