CTA construction to cause lane closure on Dan Ryan

(CHICAGO) Starting this week, one inbound lane will close on the Dan Ryan Expressway for several months to make way for construction on the CTA Red Line’s 95th/Dan Ryan train station and bus terminal.

Construction for the CTA’s 95th Street Terminal Improvement Project requires an extended closure of the left inbound lane where I-57 merges into the Dan Ryan, just north of 95th Street, according to a statement from the CTA. The lane closure will begin Saturday, weather permitting, and last until fall 2017.

The closure, which was also in effect in fall 2016, could cause delays in the area, the transit agency said. Traffic monitoring devices and changeable message signs will be installed along northbound I-57 and Illinois State Police will be adding extra patrols in the area, to enforce work zone speed limits, among other things. Drivers are urged to allow extra time for trips in the area and pay close attention to flaggers and signs in the work zones.

Workers will be completing construction on the new facility’s foundations, and working on what will be two CTA terminal buildings – one north and one south of 95th Street – that will replace the transit agency’s existing 95th Street bus and rail facility, the CTA said.

For more information on the project, visit: http://www.transitchicago.com/95thTerminal/.

Eastbound I-80 reopens after jack-knifed semis close lanes

(JOLIET) Two jack-knifed semi trucks temporarily closed all eastbound lanes of I-80 early Tuesday in southwest suburban Joliet.

The semis jack-knifed about 3:25 a.m. on eastbound I-80 just east of the Des Plaines River bridge, according to Illinois State Police. The crashes were “minor” and no injuries were reported.

All eastbound lanes were closed in the area, but were reopened to traffic by 5:10 a.m., police said. Slick road conditions likely played a role, as a lake-effect snow system was forecasted to bring up to 10 inches of snow in parts of the Chicago area by midday Tuesday.

Crashes close I-55 in Channahon

(CHANNAHON) Lanes of I-55 were closed in both directions Wednesday morning after at least two crashes in southwest suburban Channahon.

One crash, which involved eight to 10 cars, happened at 5:49 a.m. near Arsenal Road, according to Illinois State Police.

Police said a separate crash happened about that same time in the northbound lanes of I-55 near the bridge over the Des Plaines River.

No injuries were reported as of 7:30 a.m., but all three southbound lanes were closed to traffic and traffic on the northbound side was only getting by on the shoulder, police said. Further details were not immediately available.

Snow was forecasted in areas south of I-80 through 9 a.m. Tuesday. The Illinois Department of Transportation warned drivers to be cautious of snow or ice-covered roads in the area throughout the morning commute.

“This app is one more tool in our kit as we work to keep our roads in excellent condition,” said DuPage County Transportation Committee Chairman Don Puchalski in the statement. “Using the application, motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians can alert us to an unsafe condition so we can remedy the situation much faster. It’s a win-win for our taxpayers and our road crews.”

Weather, roadwork add up to good forecast for holiday commuters

(CHICAGO) The forecast for holiday travelers is encouraging, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation.

All signs point to acceptable road conditions for Chicagoans who plan to travel over the Thanksgiving weekend, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Though some roadblocks are inevitable — work on the Jane Byrne Interchange will continue, for example — other lane closures “will be lifted wherever possible,” said Gianna Urgo, spokeswoman for the Illinois Department of Transportation.

For instance, Illinois Tollway officials announced last week that more lanes were being opened on the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway as work wraps up on the $2.5 billion project to rebuild and widen that highway.

Additionally, the National Weather Service forecast for the rest of the week has just a little rain in it, and Thanksgiving itself is expected to be partly sunny. High temperatures will be in the 40s through Sunday.

Still, Priscilla Tobias, director of IDOT’s office of program development, is urging commuters to remain cautious.

“The holiday season is the busiest travel season,” Tobias said, “you’re also at a higher risk for being in a crash.”

There have been 974 traffic fatalities in Illinois this year through November 20, up roughly 10 percent from 2015’s 868. IDOT surveys also show that seat belt use by Illinois drivers in 2016 has decreased slightly, from 95.2 percent last year to 93 percent this year. That has Tobias worried.

“The major contributing factor in vehicular fatalities is lack of seatbelt usage,” Tobias said. “We have people getting ejected [from their cars] in crashes that could have been preventable.”

The Chicago Police Department announced they would have hundreds of extra officers on patrol, and would seatbelt and DUI checkpoints in place through Sunday. That day-and-night effort is an attempt to prevent Illinois’ traffic fatality numbers from reaching their highest in seven years.

State Police Capt. David Byrd says the increased enforcement will not slow down travelers who are obeying the law.

“We’ll have mobile patrols, some traffic stops,” Byrd said. “It shouldn’t slow anybody down too much.”

How Will Wrigleyville look during a World Series? A Transportation Guide to this Weekend’s Games

Jen DeSalvo, WLS-AM 890 Traffic

(CHICAGO) The bustle of Clark and Addison can be invigorating during the months of Cubs play (or on any given Saturday night with out of town imbibers). Though traffic and public transportation typically function in a “business-as-usual” manner during these times.

Not this time. It’s the World Series, and the city of Chicago is preparing diligently for the upcoming home games. Unlike regular season games, strict street closures will be in place with limited access by vehicle to locations within a half of a mile around Wrigley Field.

According to a press release from the Office of Emergency Management Communications, CPD officers will be conducting security checks within a two-block perimeter of the field, and any alcohol found on the public way will be confiscated.

A secondary perimeter will be put into effect at the start of home games to restrict incoming traffic to local residential traffic only. Motorists will have to provide a photo ID with proof of address to enter. Residents who park their cars on ten streets within four blocks around Wrigley Field will have to find somewhere else to park.

Due to these multiple street closures and heavy parking restrictions listed below, public transportation is highly recommended. Metra offers an $8-unlimited ride pass on weekends. Plus, the camaraderie on the Red Line after a win is incomparable!

* ADA PARA-TRANSIT DROP-OFF/PICK-UP: Located at the corner of Sheffield and Addison.
* BIKE VALET: Free bike check service to bicyclists at Addison and Sheffield two hours before games until one hour after the game.
REMOTE PARKING
The Cubs offer free remote parking at 3900 N. Rockwell St., just east of the Chicago River and accessed from Irving Park Road. The lot includes free shuttle service to and from Wrigley Field, beginning three and a half hours before the first pitch until one hour after the end of the game.

Trains

Red Line
The ballpark is just a half block west of the Addison stop on the CTA Red Line.

To get to the Addison stop from the south (including downtown), take a Red Line train toward Howard. From the north, take a Red Line train toward 95th.

The ballpark is also just a couple of blocks south of the Sheridan stop on the CTA Red Line.

Extra service will be extended into overnight hours to accommodate the extra foot traffic from Cubs fans.

World Series Special: Ride historic 2400-series cars

Some fans heading to the Cubs World Series games at Wrigley Field will end up boarding a piece of Chicago history on their way to the historic games. For Games 3, 4 and 5 of the World Series, the CTA will be operating will the “World Series Special” 2400-series train (built 1976-1978) on the Red Line leading up to first pitch.

Check out this neat video showcasing the “World Series Special” train.

Skokie Yellow Line

Yellow Line trains between Howard and Skokie will run until 2 a.m.

Buses

You can also use CTA bus routes #8 Halsted, #22 Clark #80 Irving Park or #152 Addison (connects to the Brown and Blue lines) will be available three hours before the game time through an hour after it ends.

Parking downtown and taking the Red Line north toward Howard is another option. Oftentimes, garages in the Loop and River North neighborhoods have lower rates on the weekends.
