Police: Altercation leads to fatal shooting in Lake View

(Chicago) A 25-year-old man was shot and killed early Saturday during an altercation with another man in the Lake View neighborhood on the North Side.

The shooting happened about 2 a.m. in the 900 block of West Oakdale, police said.

The man was shot twice in the chest and pronounced dead at the scene, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

An officer at the scene said the shooting might have stemmed from an armed robbery for a cell phone.

Both the Diversey and Wellington CTA stations — which are about a block north and south from the shooting — were shut down as police searched the area, officials at the scene said.

The shooting occurred near the 2900 block of North Sheffield Avenue, where a slew of popular bars and restaurants line the street. The man’s body was located in an alley directly underneath CTA train tracks, leading one area worker to speculate why he didn’t hear any gunshots.

“The train comes and goes and it’s loud,” one area worker said, who declined to give his name. “It’s crazy something like this would happen here.”

More than a dozen police vehicles were at the scene, stretching from Wellington to Diversey and Sheffield as they canvassed the area for evidence.

No one was in custody early Saturday, police said, and Area North detectives are investigating.
