DUI charges filed in Evanston crash that left U.S. Army veteran dead

(EVANSTON) A north suburban woman is facing DUI charges for a rollover crash that left a U.S. Army veteran dead early Sunday in Evanston.

Monica Wallace, 42, has been charged with aggravated DUI and misdemeanor DUI for the crash that left 45-year-old Lamart Bailey dead, according to

About 2:20 a.m. Sunday, Wallace was driving a 1998 Nissan northbound in the 1700 block of Dodge Avenue with Bailey in the front passenger seat when the vehicle struck multiple parked cars on both sides of the street, then flipped over, according to a statement from police.

Fire crews had to extricate Bailey, who was taken to Evanston Hospital, where died at 2:51 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Bailey, who police identified as a U.S. Army veteran, lived in the 1800 block of Wesley Avenue in Evanston, authorities said.

Wallace was taken to the same hospital and remained in ICU as of Tuesday afternoon, according to police.

Wallace, the 1400 block of Brown Avenue in Evanston, was also cited for disobeying a red light, driving in the wrong lane, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, and driving without insurance, police said.

She is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 9 in Skokie, police said.
