(EVANSTON) Two men in a car that crashed into an Evanston restaurant during a police chase Friday now face criminal charges.

They were in a car that took off when an officer tried to pull it over for a traffic violation around 6:30 p.m. near Church Street and Ridge Avenue, according to Evanston police.

The vehicle hit another car at Davis Street and Sherman Avenue, then veered into the front window of a Freshii restaurant at 1569 Sherman Ave. that was closed for the New Year’s holiday.

The driver, 18-year-old Cortez Heard, and 22-year-old Deqwan Kidd, who was in the front passenger seat, were treated for minor injuries at Evanston Hospital, according to police, who said officers found a handgun and a small amount of marijuana in the car. They are both Chicago residents.

A 25-year-old woman who was in the back seat of their car was not injured, as was the 51-year-old woman driving the vehicle they crashed into at the intersection, police said. The restaurant sustained cosmetic damage.

Heard was charged with driving under the influence and two counts of felony fleeing and eluding and was also issued “numerous” traffic citations. A judge ordered him held on a $15,000 bond, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office. He is due back in court Thursday.

Kidd was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and not having a valid state firearm owner’s identification card. His bond was set at $50,000 and his next court date is Tuesday.
