Cuts to Largest Social Service Provider

By Nick Gale, WLS News
(CHICAGO) Lutheran Social Services of Illinois, which is the largest statewide provider of social services, has announced that because of the state budget impasse, they will close some programs and layoff some 750 people.
Lutheran Social Services is known for it’s lean overhead using most of their funds on services. The closures and cancellations come at a time when the state owes LSSI over $6 million.
Officials say for the past several months the agency has had to rely on a bank line of credit and their foundation to compensate for the state’s inability to pay its bills.
The biggest impact will be to home care services.
