Report:   Young black men faring poorly in Chicago

(CHICAGO)  A new report this morning paints a bleak picture of young black men in Chicago.   The report from the University of Illinois-Chicago’s Great Cities Institute, says nearly half of young black men in Chicago are either unemployed, or not in school.

Forty-seven percent of 20- to 24-year-old black men in Chicago are neither working nor going to school.   The Chicago numbers far exceed the national figure of 32 percent young black male unemployment, and 30 percent in New York City and Los Angeles.

When young black women are added into the equation, the Chicago number is 41 percent, compared with 18 percent for Hispanics and six percent for whites in the same age group.
