Big John Howell Show Notes 2-17-16

Tech giant Apple and the FBI appeared headed for a deepening confrontation Wednesday after the company’s chief pledged to fight federal demands to help mine data from an iPhone used by one of the shooters in December’s terrorist attacks in San Bernardino. The clash reflects wider debates in the United States and elsewhere over security measures used by companies to protect users of devices such as smartphones — and how much leverage authorities should have to gain special access.

When Governor Bruce Rauner presents his budget Wednesday to the Illinois General Assembly he plans to place some of his focus on restoring state aid for early childhood and K-12 education. The state has been running without a budget since last July. Chris Kaergard with the Peoria Journal Star joined John with a preview and also an update on his “Budget Beard.” (Listen here)

Donald Trump holds a broad 16-point lead among those likely to vote in South Carolina’s Republican primary this Saturday, according to a new CNN/ORC Poll. Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton tops Bernie Sanders by 18 points in the state’s Democratic primary, which will be held a week later. Mark Preston the Executive Editor of Politics for CNN joined John with a preview of the South Carolina primary. (Listen here)

For years we’ve been hearing about the possibility of a brokered convention. With Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders surprising party leaders, both parties are beginning to plan for the possibility. Could it actually happen this time? Ben Schreckinger with Politico joined John to explain how a brokered convention would work, and the likelihood of it actually happening for either party. The Chinese military has deployed an advanced surface-to-air missile system to one of its contested islands in the South China Sea. The move is said to be more evidence that China is increasingly “militarizing” its islands in the South China Sea and ramping up tensions in the region. K.T. McFarland the National Security Analyst for Fox News Channel joined John with reaction. (Listen here)

The Chicago Public Library really wants people to come back, despite the fact the compendium of human knowledge (and porn) is available at your fingertips. They’re offering amnesty from fines for anyone who wants to bring back an overdue book and get back in their good graces. They’ve released a series of funny videos letting people know about the amnesty.

The Women’s Bike Messenger Association in Chicago has a new video out pushing for an end to cat calling and harassment on the streets. Their message: cat calling and harassment in any profession is not ok. The couriers say they’re trying to turn their negative experiences into a positive by pushing for change.

A dozen protesters were arrested Tuesday morning, after blocking traffic on Congress Parkway as part of an anti-deportation rally that lasted more than an hour. The demonstrators were protesting U.S. immigration policies, and law enforcement raids on immigrants’ homes.

A new video posted to YouTube this week claimed to show a Bigfoot in Payson Canyon, Utah. According to the video’s description, the footage was captured in the spring of 2015.The 46-second video begins with a view of a babbling brook. After about 10 seconds, the camera is angled to the right and captures something moving on the hillside above.
