Big John Howell Show Notes 2-29-16

It’s February 29th, Leap day! Some number crunchers are saying if you’re a salaried employee, you might actually be working this day for free.

At the 88th Academy Awards Sunday night, host Chris Rock gave a blistering opening monologue aimed squarely at the #OscarsSoWhite controversy to riotous, and at times nervous, laughter from the crowd. The host took aim at the nominating categories for Best Actor and Best Actress, joking, “Welcome to the Academy Awards, otherwise known as the White People Choice Awards.” “The Revenant” wound up capturing three Oscars over all, compared with two for “Spotlight.’’ “Mad Max: Fury Road” led all films with six awards, including several in the technical categories.

Marco Rubio is attacking rival Donald Trump over one of his biggest weaknesses: his short fingers. Rubio pointed out Trump’s “small hands” in comparison to the billionaire’s height at a campaign rally on Sunday night.

Super Tuesday is likely to live up to its billing for Donald Trump. The first day of multiple-state voting looms large in a wild presidential race after early states trimmed the field and the brash billionaire and his army of outsider voters are positioned to send panic through the Republican establishment by tightening his grip on the party’s nomination. Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton is hoping to start locking out her Democratic rival Bernie Sanders, who is giving her a tougher-than-expected challenge

Michael Hayden told Bill Maher that if Trump were elected, our troops would not be able to follow some of his orders. Hayden said that Trump has said he would order soldiers to do some things that are illegal in the United States, and soldiers would have an obligation not to follow the orders, because they violate the law.

Something to keep in mind as we move into Super Tuesday: According to a new poll, 38% of Florida voters believe it’s possible Ted Cruz could be the Zodiac Killer. Only 10% answered “yes” but 28% said they were unsure. The poll just happens to be from the same company that asked voters if they support bombing Agrabah.

Reporter are beginning to ripple the waters that Peyton Manning will retire. The announcement will probably come this week.
