Illinois man to plead guilty in celebrity hacking case

CHICAGO (AP) — An Illinois man has agreed to plead guilty to hacking into email and electronic accounts of 30 celebrities and stealing private information, including nude videos and photos.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California says 28-year-old Edward Majerczyk was charged Friday with felony computer hacking. The resident of Chicago and Orland Park, Illinois, signed a plea agreement and the case is being transferred to Chicago for sentencing.

Prosecutors say he used a phishing scheme to obtain usernames and passwords of victims between November 2013 and August 2014. He then used the information to illegally access more than 300 email and other online accounts.

It was unknown Saturday whether Majerczyk has an attorney who could comment on his behalf.

He faces up to five years in prison.
