(CHICAGO) — Once again, Chicago officials are encouraging residents to help veterans through Operation Help-A-Hero. The collection drive helps homeless Veterans move on to permanent housing.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Ald. Matthew O’Shea (19th) are asking for Chicagoans to donate every day items such as cleaning products, kitchen supplies, and toiletries.

“It’s another thing not just to have a roof over your head, but have the basic items as each of our veterans then go pursue a career a job interview and go on with their lives,” Emanuel said.

Last year’s collection drive raised $500,000 in goods that helped thousands of veterans.

Operation Help-A-Hero runs through July 4. Supplies can be dropped off at local ward offices or at 14 participating locations.
