Bill Cameron Explains The Winners and Losers From The Illinois Budget Battle

(SPRINGFIELD) The Illinois House of Representatives has completed override action on Governor Bruce Rauner’s veto of the Democrats budget.

Without a vote to spare, Democrats and some Republicans raised the state income tax to just under 5%.

During the debate, Republican Rep Davis Harris of the Mt Prospect area said they really had no responsible choice, “We are looking into an abyss. That state is imploding financially.”

But Republican David McSweeny from the Cary area cried out against raising the income tax, saying “We’ve all heard from our constituents on how they’re going to pay their high property taxes. They’re wondering how they’re going to pay their living expenses because we’re raising their income taxes by 32%.  And what do we get? Nothing! We get nothing but more taxes and more of the status quo.”

The vote was delayed for two hours by a hazmat alert which some predict may be a metaphor for the upcoming campaign for governor.
