Chicago Alderman does not regret speaking out against gangs

By John Dempsey

(CHICAGO) Chicago Alderman Raymond Lopez was on WLS Friday morning to talk about his controversial comments he made a few months ago, when he said “no innocent lives were lost” in a fatal gang shooting in his neighborhood.

Lopez, who represents the 15th ward on the southwest side, told “The Big John and Ramblin’ Ray Show” that in the weeks since he made that statement, he has received a lot of support in his community.

‘”No I do not regret those statements,” Lopez said, “It is as true today as it was on May 8th when that shooting happened. In the days and months since, yes there have been people who are upset but there are many more who feel like finally that we are starting to address the truth about what’s going on in our streets.   Gangs and gang supporters and sympathizers, while shooting at themselves, are harming the innocent families, the children that are just trying to get by and go about their daily lives within the streets of Chicago.”

Lopez  made his “no innocent lives were lost” comment in May, after two people were killed and eight others wounded at a makeshift memorial near 46th and Rockwell Ave., for another man who had been killed in a previous shooting near that location.
