Springfield, Rockford airports sharing $11 million in grants

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — A pair of Illinois airports in Rockford and Springfield will receive federal grants totaling more than $11 million toward improvement projects.

Members of Illinois’ congressional delegation announced the grant money. More than $8.3 million is headed to Chicago Rockford International Airport. Of that money about $5.5 million will go toward funding the second phase of a terminal expansion plan. The remainder of about $2.8 million will be used to expand the cargo apron to provide more aircraft parking. The airport has received nearly $17 million in federal funding since 2015.

The Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport in Springfield also is getting federal help. About $3 million has been set aside to help modernize and rehab about two miles of the service road connected to the airport.
