“Fiesty” Debate At City Hall On Pop Tax

By Bill Cameron, WLS-AM News

(CHICAGO)  No vote was taken today on the proposal to repeal the Cook County penny per ounce pop tax, but there was plenty of public testimony for and against it.

Nearly three hours of public comments from dozens of people produced fiesty debate.

Retired registered nurse Audrey Wheeler denounced soda pop, saying “Drinking too much soda can cause a host of dental problems including gum disease, tooth decay, tooth cavities and even bad breath!”

But the Mayor of Wurth, Mary Werner, said her constituents denounce the tax. “I would like to share with you one of the quotes from a resident that sums up pretty much how they all feel. Thank you Cook County for teaching all of us our money goes farther elsewhere.”

When the testimony ended, county commissioners decided to send the repealer to Finance Committee where Chairman John Daley is promising a hearing before the next County Board meeting on October 11th.
