Pop Tax “In Trouble”

By Bill Cameron, WLS-AM News

(CHICAGO)  A vote was delayed Wednesday on repealing Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle’s penny per ounce pop tax, but the politics have not been delayed.

Big Soda has incited so much push back against the pop tax, challengers to Preckwinkle are beginning to surface.

Chief among them is West Side county commissioner Richard Boykin. He’s offered up a variety of economies to replace the pop tax, but Preckwinkle dares him to prove they’re real, adding

“I’d ask him to prove it up! He didn’t bring it up in the last budget cycle. He’s welcome to try this time. I don’t think he can do it.”

But the pop tax is in trouble and Preckwinkle may end up vetoing a repealer or coming up with a replacement of her own.
