Rauner stunt reminds some of Jane Byrne’s Cabrini Green stay

(CHICAGO)  Governor Bruce Rauner’s political opponents are calling his stay at the Quincy Veterans Home a publicity stunt which reminds some of a similar stay and a similar charge against a Chicago mayor he covered.

Back in 1981, Mayor Jane Byrne also got accused of trying to pull off a publicity stunt. She moved into the CHA’s Cabrini-Green Public Housing complex on the Near North Side to bring attention to problem of murders there.

Here she is in March of ’81 denying her stay was politically motivated, “If anybody thinks that this is a fun trip, you’re very wrong. It is not a fun trip. If anybody thinks it is a political trip, it is not a political trip. Just take a walk down a corridor. Just take a walk along the street and see if you feel very secure that someone just might shoot at you from a window.”

Jane Byrne stayed for three weeks, but her stay did not silence the publicity stunt complaint and Bruce Rauner’s stay at Quincy probably won’t either.
