Emanuel greets strikers outside of City Hall

(CHICAGO) Outside City Hall this morning, it was a very unusual scene as Mayor Rahm Emanuel greeted striking window washers demonstrating for a $25-an-hour wage.

I can’t remember any mayor coming down to the City Hall sidewalk to shake hands to support noisy demonstrators, but Rahm did just that for these striking window washers.

On the scene, Service Employees Union president Tom Balanoff agreed Rahm didn’t do himself any harm perhaps eventually winning some union backing for re-election, noting “I don’t think any political leader does himself any harm when he stands with working people.”

Corporate Cleaning Services says the union’s 25% over two years wage demand is unreasonable. The company says it’s offered a 27% wage increase over five years, plus health care benefits for most of the window washers.
